What can I put on my living room wall? Explore our 10 ideas

interior wall design ideas

Other top trends include wood paneling, oversized art, photo murals, and floor-to-ceiling drapery. Stick to one wall,” advises Molly Torres Portnof of Brooklyn–based DATE Interiors. One can only imagine the visual chaos of three different accent walls in one bedroom (shiplap, wallpaper, and a black accent wall…yikes!).

Light Up Your Living Room Interior Wall Design

Natural stone is easily one of the most expensive surface materials money can buy. To cut costs but still spotlight a beautiful stone, just stick with one accent wall. In this kitchen designed by Tamsin Johnson, all eyes are on the smokey purple swirls of the wall ahead. In Eliza Carter Harris's New York home, the designer painted one wall bright green and layered it with curtains to soften up the space and accentuate the high ceilings.

Use Contrast to Showcase Art

The key to correctly incorporating artwork and wall decor together is to ensure they balance off seamlessly instead of making the wall look chaotic. If the artwork is the centre of attention, keep the decor minimal and in sync with the colour palette. Half-wall paneling up the staircase to match the rest of the hallway pulls the lofty appearance of this entryway together perfectly. Have a bash at DIY picture frame molding for a low-cost feature wall that requires minimum effort. "Our last two homes have been a newly built townhouse and a 1930s red-brick semi-detached and we have added DIY paneling to both," he explains. The type of paneling should be sympathetic to the property but you can also have some fun with it."

Wow With Wallpaper

This style stands strong among classic interior wall design ideas, whether you have a traditional Indian home or a modern haven. As we have explored in this piece, you can be as bold or as subtle as you like with your chosen decorations. Does the idea of bright paint all over your house scare you to your very core?

Create a bonus window

Create a nook for a bed and balance out the functional nature of the cabinetry with a decorative wallpaper above the bed and a pair of wall-mounted sconces that eliminate the need for nightstands. A modern floral print wallpaper puts an updated spin on bedroom florals in this sweet pastel pink room. It adds a stylish yet whimsical touch and pulls in the wide variety of pink tones throughout the room. No room is complete without a wall decoration or two, and when it comes to the living room, there are so many different options to choose from. If you're having trouble deciding the direction in which you'd like to go when it comes to living room wall decor, we're here to help. Read on to gather ideas from 30 inspiring living rooms that will suit every style.

Window Adjacent Gray and White Paneling

Embrace the rugged charm of a brick wall, no matter your interior design style. Add character to white wainscoting wall paneling using mirror ideas to create a gallery-esque finish. Not only does it look cool and clean-cut but it also enhances the space. With many homeowners looking to improve their existing space with sustainability in mind, color, and pattern enthusiast Amy Vroom of The Residency Bureau created textured wall panels from recycled wood tiles. One of the most stylish and thoughtful elements in interior design is the incorporation of photographs. Take these decorative flower petal-shaped wall lights as an example—they not only illuminate your living space but also infuse a touch of sophistication.

Opt for wood paneling in a bold color

You can match wall decor to the style of your home or mix it up for a more eclectic look. If you love baking, decorate your kitchen with vintage illustrations of cakes and pastries. Hang an oversize color photograph in your bathroom or a row of stuffed animal trophy heads in the nursery. Art and decor is personal and should reflect your tastes and sensibilities; forget the rules. Most wall panelling on the market today is made from MDF, with the intention that it is painted.

Inject instant character into a bedroom with a stone accent wall that gives it a historic quality. Echo the warmth of the stone with hardwood floors and keep the space fresh and modern with crisp white walls. Though color is often the first thing we turn to when a home is feeling lackluster or flat, texture is an equally (if not more) effective tool for livening up a room. Indeed, introducing texture to a space has the added bonus of bringing in depth and dimension, and even color-averse decorators can reap the benefits. Dressing your walls up in natural materials like marble and wood—or even paints and wallpapers with perceived texture effects—will instantly liven up a room that's falling flat without taking up surface space. Add a focal point to your living room, bedroom, hallway or other space with these feature wall ideas.

Add color, texture, and interest to blank spaces with these simple solutions. "Choosing wall paneling is really is up to what you like but, there are a few things to consider," says Jo Lemos, a DIY blogger and member of Real Homes Real Experts panel. A favorite of ours on the color chart, dark yellows exude a fiery hue reminiscent of tasty saffron, cumin, and turmeric. Larger areas look good with bigger frame sizes, while small, awkward spaces tend to suit reeded paneling or beadboard. This light gray color paint from Lick is a great choice to recreate the look.

Whether you want to go classic or contemporary with shiplap or wainscoting looks, there's no better way to add more design interest to a room than with this wall covering. Wall paneling ideas have come a long way and are no longer reserved for historic homes. Now, many of the best decorative moldings are often more budget-friendly, sustainable, and easy to DIY. But to everyone else, the word “modern” is simply a shorthand for interiors that feel fresh, inviting, and livable in the here and now. When choosing between paint, wallpaper, or other wall treatments, consider your desired home ambience, budget, and the room’s function to make the correct decision. When you are ready to bring your dream interior to life, don’t hesitate to book a free consultation with DesignCafe.

In this bath, a shelf is installed between the brick and shiplap sections, providing both a storage solution and a way to bridge both materials. Provided the walls are fairly level, MDF panelling is easy to fit on a DIY basis. Ensure the company you are buying from offers good instructions before you invest. Where paneling is not used at full height, paneling tends to look best installed at either one-third or two-thirds of the room’s height, although this may be influenced by features such as fireplaces or windowsills. Use traditional molding like this wooden molding from Wayfair to create the look.

This space perfectly marries modern elegance with rustic charm by incorporating a grey sectional sofa and a stylish marble coffee table. You have probably encountered walls with texture, grainy finishes, or 3D designs, adding a tactile and visually appealing dimension. These textured walls bring a sense of intrigue, transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones. Take this living room, where a subtly pastel-toned textured wall behind the TV unit creates an earthy and playful atmosphere. With the right textures, your living spaces can become inviting and cosy, making your home truly exceptional. You can go with a patterned, textured, or solid-colored wallpaper to make a statement.

Here, a wood beam with inset lights installed over the sink anchors the space and adds interest. Don’t be afraid to bust out the drill and add even more style to your brick wall. Small hooks can be used for everything from hanging art to indoor plants. This eccentric wallpaper has beautiful fine detail and is perfect for creating a feeling of grandness reminiscent of stately homes and vintage bedroom designs. New construction homes, like Lemos's townhome, above are packed with modern amenities, but they often lack the charm of older abodes. Board and batten paneling feels modern enough for new homes, while still adding a touch of character to the space.

Look at this bedroom with a queen-sized bed against a wooden panelled wall, creating an inviting, earthy aesthetic. The room boasts a four-door modular wardrobe with separate sections for optimal storage, a compact study corner with a floating cabinet and wall-mounted bookshelf, and a pendant light for elegance. This melds aesthetics and practicality, allowing you to tailor your living spaces to your design preferences. Create a tonal look with blue paneling on the walls and ceiling that's accented with darker blue trim. The painted wall covering gains an updated appearance in this attic bedroom through pops of yellow, white, gray, and navy in the form of modern furniture, artwork, and bedding. When working with a neutral color palette in a bedroom, layer contrasting patterns, textures, and materials to add visual interest.

The gold and white colour combination adds to the serenity of the space. Just because it’s a small sliver of brick doesn’t mean it isn’t worth salvaging. This is usually more common in older homes where additions were built onto existing spaces, but it can also be used as a strategy to lend character and historic charm to new builds as well. To lean into this aesthetic, choose furnishings and decor elements with character and vintage appeal to really draw out the historical appeal. When you’re working with existing brick structures, you might have to get creative with furnishings.

A Tour of the 24,000-Square-Foot Winchester Mansion in California

sarah winchester house

What many consider to be the heart of the mansion, the séance room was once the very private and off-limits room to everyone but Sarah Winchester herself. Legends say that nearby residents heard the bell tower (located outside of the séance room) at midnight and again at 2am. Was this to summon and release spirits to communicate with them? One exit is through the entrance door, another leads to an 8-foot drop into the kitchen below, and the final is a one-way door that resembles a secret passageway. You’ll have to come see for yourself what lies on the other side.

IT’S REGULARLY CITED AS ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTED PLACES IN AMERICA.

The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922. The Victorian and Gothic-style mansion is renowned for its size and its architectural curiosities and for the numerous myths and legends surrounding the structure and its former owner. Although Sarah is best known for building what would come to be known as the Winchester Mystery House, she also left other marks on the world. Four years into the construction of the mansion, Sarah Winchester purchased a 140-acre patch of land in what is now downtown Los Altos, California, as well as a nearby farmhouse for her sister and brother-in-law. The Winchester Mystery House is famous amongst history and mystery aficionados alike with its winding staircases, doors that lead to nowhere, and reported hauntings.

Odd design elements, like stairways that lead to nowhere, also make this house so well known.

Library of CongressSarah Winchester’s bedroom in her mystery mansion. Not one to risk eternal damnation at the hands of angry spirits, Sarah Winchester made it her mission to follow the medium’s advice. Soon after her visit, she packed up and moved as far west from New England as she could — to the sunny bayside city of San Jose, California.

Simply a blog to inspire a joyful life.

Ever since doors opened for tours in 1923, guests have traveled from all over the world to marvel in the beautiful and the bizarre. While visiting the Winchester Mystery House, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the must-see rooms inside of the world-famous mansion. Furthermore, there was a plausible explanation for some of the house's oddities; instead of rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake, Winchester simply had some passageways sealed off, resulting in the doors and stairways that went nowhere.

The Guided Mansion Tour

Enjoy unprecedented access to the world’s most bizarre mansion with an all-new tour —The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360° Tour. This virtual experience allows guests to independently roam each level of the mansion, while exploring many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours. All that talk of paranormal sometimes worries parents that the tour will be to scary for children. Not to worry – all ages are welcome and the tour is very family friendly! Children five and under are free and ages 6-12 will need a ticket. As you walk away from the house’s manicured grounds, the polished facade of the upscale mall across the street smacks you in the face.

Demystifying the Winchester Mystery House

Boehme said it's likely that Winchester used this space as a sauna to help ease her arthritis. Winchester wanted the carriage room to be covered with a roof so that she could get in and out of the house without ever getting wet by the rain. The room is also notable because there is a strange door that opens onto a wall and another door that is too small to walk through.

sarah winchester house

Staffers found her in a bedroom that had been obscured by rubble. To this day, Winchester House is a destination for believers who hope to have a paranormal encounter of their own. A popular spot for such activity is the corridors of the third floor, where tour guides have claimed to hear footsteps and disembodied voices whisper their names.

Futaba Cake Building

The staircase landing opens onto an array of finished and unfinished rooms, including the Crystal Bedroom, where pale yellow, mica-flecked wallpaper gives the walls a luminous quality. One reason this room had been off-limits for so many years is concern about what sunlight might do to the wallpaper, so at some point it may need to be sealed off again. The front hall staircase leads to a Tiffany-style stained-glass window that surely once provided bright beams of color. But it was later completely enclosed by a new exterior wall, presumably put up at Winchester’s request.

An American Penelope, working in wood rather than yarn, Winchester wove and unwove eternally. Winchester hastily sketched designs on napkins or brown paper for carpenters to build additions, towers, cupolas or rooms that made no sense and had no purpose, sometimes only to be plastered over the next day. It had two chairs, an early 1900s speaker that fit into an old phonograph, and a door latched by a 1910 lock.

With additional unique architectural elements and captivating stories to share, Explore More promises a deeper look into our story like never before. Starting Friday the 13th we will be hosting Flashlight Tours every Friday evening till February 24th. These self-guided tours give guests the opportunity to roam through the halls of the purportedly haunted Victorian mansion while hearing tales of its former and (possibly current!) inhabitants. Guests will guide themselves through the mansion that is famous for its dizzying floorplan and lack of formal blueprints. Tour Hosts will be stationed throughout the house to ensure guests don’t get lost. But the drama of this house, like the drama of Winchester’s life, was unfolding on the inside.

Some staff members and guests have refused entry into this room, claiming a high amount of spiritual energy. Crowded feelings from an unusually shaped room or paranormal happenings? We offer the Mansion Tour for guests to learn about the amazing woman at the heart of this home, and to see all the bizarre architectural designs and mysterious elements of the Winchester Mystery House. But there is only so much we can show you and tell you about in one hour.

She was known for paying her workers well above the usual rate. Oftentimes, she would buy homes for her employees' families to live in while they worked on her home. At the time, newspapers were filled with advertisements, luring people to move across the country and settle in the newly incorporated California. Winchester first lived in San Francisco, but the weather bothered her arthritis. Instead, she decided to buy 40 acres of land and build a small farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley.

Follow us on Twitter to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders. No one is quite sure why Mrs. Winchester demanded constant changes to her very large house. "I'd like to think that [people] come to appreciate Sarah as more than just this eccentric, ghost-ridden, tragic figure," Boehme said. "She was actually a pretty interesting person, a smart lady, and she was good to her employees. She was never afraid of trying something new. She really was a good person." The ballroom is the biggest room in the house with the highest ceiling, reaching 12 feet.

In 1886 Winchester bought a 40-acre plot of land in San Jose, California, which included an eight-room cottage. Over the next 20 years, at a cost of approximately $5 million, the cottage was rebuilt into a 160-room mansion, covering an area of 24,000 square feet. Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in 1839 (some sources say 1840) in New Haven, Connecticut, to Sarah Burns and Leonard Pardee. Her father managed the City Bathing House until finding success as a finish carpenter, providing financial security for the family. He also ran a progressive household, holding court with prominent abolitionists and freethinkers of the day.

Instead of building a university or a library, Sarah Winchester built a counter-legend to the thousands of American gunslinger stories.

Ghostly music

And it's said that each night, she visited the Séance Room to speak with the spirits, who weighed in on plans for the house's unusual design. In 1906, the great San Francisco Earthquake caused three floors of the then seven-story house to cave in. A 1900 postcard of the place shows a tower that was later toppled by the natural disaster. That tower—plus several other rooms destroyed in the disaster—were never rebuilt, but cordoned off. As for Sarah, she was safe but stuck in the Daisy Bedroom, named for the floral motif in its windows. She had to be dug out by her staff, as its entrance was blocked off by rubble.

Prepare to uncover hidden secrets and unlock doors to the oldest sections of the home. This self guided tour that allows you to walk the halls at your own pace in the dark with a flashlight. Among the secrets Sarah took to her grave was why she insisted that so many things relate to the number 13. The Winchester House has many 13-paned windows and 13-paneled ceilings, as well as 13-step stairways. But the pièce de résistance might be the house's 13th bathroom, which contains 13 windows of its own.

There were 13 bathrooms, 13 windows in the last bathroom built, and 13 hooks in the above mentioned séance room. There were also 13 parts to her will, which she had to sign 13 times. In addition to making these strange modifications, she made quite a few additions for herself. Luxury fixtures adorned the mansion, including parquet flooring, crystal chandeliers, gilded doorways, and even stained glass windows handcrafted by Tiffany & Co’s first design director Louis Comfort Tiffany. Construction lasted for thirty-eight years on the Winchester Mystery House, one of North America’s most unusual and eccentric homes located in the heart of San Jose, California. Through the 160-room labyrinth-style mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, there are many beautiful and extraordinary examples of the Queen-Anne Victorian Style architecture.

There is a vast network of secret passages twisting throughout the property. Many visitors are fascinated by the vast collection of windows—more than 10,000 panes—and the fact that some of the loveliest Tiffany stained glass is hidden away where no light can reach it. Some also say that  she thought that if she never finished the mansion, then she would never die. To do that, she made doors that opened into walls and stairs that led nowhere. Mostly built from sturdy redwood lumber that she hated, Sarah had the wood then painted with a wood grain pattern that she liked.

The garden tour is entirely outdoors and a completely touchless, experience featuring 20 stops throughout the beautiful Victorian Gardens. Guests can go through this self-guided exploration with an audio guide and a digital map. There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom. Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction. It is true, however, that the remodeling of the house went on for decades.

According to Boehme, Winchester had a passion for remodeling and building homes after she helped construct one back in Connecticut. Boehme said the remodels were nothing but a passion project for Winchester. Those looking to explore even more of the beautiful but bizarre home of Sarah Winchester should book the Mansion Tour and spend more time in the gardens and gift shop. I must have been hoping that the house would yield up its secret to me. At first glance I was deflated, for the unusual reason that from the outside, the house wasn’t entirely weird.

If they displease or terrify, we brood or fuss over them for a while, then revise them to make them manageable, or we plaster over them and suppress them, or refashion them into another idea. The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus.

Filming for the movie took place at the actual Winchester Mystery House. Throughout the years-long construction of the Winchester Mystery House, Sarah Winchester would never confirm that she was building a haunted house. Winchester hired carpenters to work around the clock, expanding the small house into a seven-story mansion. Due to the lack of a plan and the presence of an architect, the house was constructed haphazardly; rooms were added onto exterior walls resulting in windows overlooking other rooms. Multiple staircases would be added, all with different sized risers, giving each staircase a distorted look.

Then, read about Antilla, another wildly extravagant house. Then, in September 1922, Sarah Winchester passed away peacefully in her sleep. Her house went into the hands of her secretary and niece, who sold it at auction. Whatever the answer from these spiritualists was, Winchester never ceased construction on her mansion, continuously making additions and adjustments for the sake of its spectral inhabitants.

Despite the Winchester Mystery House's cheerful appearance, this massive California mansion's history is edged with tragedy, mystery ... Naturally, it has inspired a chilling horror movie, Winchester, which opens in theaters today. But before you go to the movie theater, wander through the curious past of one of America's most infamous homes. In the Daisy Bedroom—which is on the original tour—Winchester rang a bell to summon her servants, who couldn’t find her in the chaos.

An alternate theory on the Winchester House's perplexing design declares that Sarah was creating a puzzle full of encryptions inspired by the work of English philosopher Francis Bacon. There's speculation that clues to the house's true meaning are hidden in the ballroom, the Shakespeare windows, and the iron gates. This theory suggests that Sarah was a member of a mystic society like the Rosicrucians, or a secret society like the Freemasons—or possibly both. Though the house has a reputation as a dim warren, its estimated 10,000 panes of glass reflect Winchester’s desire for natural light. At one point, an outdoor patio was enclosed, so she had a skylight installed in its floor to pull light from above into the newly shrouded room below.

Suddenly, Sarah Winchester was in possession of a $20 million fortune (equivalent to about $500 million in the present day) as well as a 50 percent stake in the Winchester Arms company. Though she never took up a position in the business, her stake left her with a continuous income of $1,000 a day (or about $26,000 a day in 2019 dollars). By some accounts, Sarah Winchester never quite recovered from the death of her infant daughter. Though she and William remained married, Sarah became increasingly distressed, often over the source of the company’s — and thus her own — wealth. In her eyes, the Winchester family business profited from death, something she couldn’t cope with.

They welcomed a daughter, their only child, four years later; sadly, she only lived six weeks. After William died of tuberculosis in 1881, his share of Winchester Repeating Arms Co.—roughly 50 percent, which was valued at approximately $20 million at the time, the L.A. She put the money towards an endowment that funded the Winchester Chest Clinic at New Haven Yale Hospital (it's still there today) and a move west to be closer to her relatives. She settled in San Jose, California, where the dry climate proved beneficial for her rheumatoid arthritis. According to the Los Angeles Times, she and her late husband had overseen the building of their former residence in New Haven, Connecticut together. "I think Sarah was trying to repeat that experience by doing something they both loved," said Janan Boehme, a historian who's worked at the Winchester Mystery House for almost 40 years.

Fashion designers also need a strong portfolio, work experience, and a professional network to break into the fashion industry. Designers must know their brand identity, aesthetic, and niche in the industry. Many fashion designers ultimately aspire to have their own brick-and-mortar boutique, but running a physical retail store requires an entirely separate skillset. This is an invaluable class for any student, but particularly for those who see themselves taking their career beyond the decision phase of fashion into entrepreneurship.

House Republicans Advance Energy and Water Funding Bill that Raises Costs for Families

house passes energy water spending bill

This is the latest example of a community seeking to block clean energy infrastructure that’s badly needed to replace fossil fuels but can be understandably scary — a topic I’ve been covering through Repowering the West. And it’s always worth keeping in mind that lithium-ion batteries, although needed to store solar power for the evening, can lead to environmental damage by spurring demand for lithium. It’s one of many metals that could be affected by a new Biden administration proposal to reform mining on public lands. Miners would have to pay royalties for the first time, and more robust tribal consultation would be required, per Hannah Northey at E&E News. Fresh off electing a new speaker, the US House of Representatives on Oct. 26 passed a fiscal year 2024 energy and water spending bill that would reduce funding for some clean energy-focused offices at the US Energy Department and claw back money for Inflation Reduction Act climate programs.

Congress has long struggled to pass spending bills on time

It’s about improving people’s lives no matter how that happens, and it’s well past time for the change. The $1.2-trillion infrastructure package just passed by Congress and awaiting President Biden’s signature shows that the term needs updating. The measure does provide billions for those traditional purposes, as well as other enhancements to our physical surroundings. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which oversees water management in the West, will ultimately decide what projects get funded. But there is a relatively small universe of water projects that will be eligible, and many of them are in California, giving the state a leg up.

House Approves H.R. 4394, The Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act

Once the president submits a budget proposal – which is supposed to happen (but often doesn’t) by the first Monday in February – the House and Senate start work on a budget resolution. This is a concurrent resolution, agreed to by both chambers but not presented to the president. While it doesn’t have the force of law, the budget resolution serves as an overall revenue and spending plan for the coming fiscal year. It guides lawmakers as they assemble the detailed appropriations bills. The new federal fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, and Congress hasn’t passed any of the dozen appropriations bills it’s supposed to enact every year. That raises the prospect of yet another forced shutdown of large chunks of the federal government – which, if it happens, would be the fourth in the past decade.

In addition to funding critical programs across the country, the federal bill secures $132.8 million for rural water projects, $344 million for state and community energy programs, like weatherization assistance, and investments in important energy security development. In addition, the legislation would repeal funding for Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) programs to improve the energy efficiency of homes and other buildings. The bill would rescind $4.5 billion in rebates for new electric appliances or home electrification projects; $1 billion to help states and local governments adopt tougher building energy codes; and $200 million to train workers to conduct home efficiency and electrification projects.

Learn how to make a budget and take control of your finances with this eight-week newsletter course. WASHINGTON – Today, the Full Committee met to consider the Fiscal Year 2024 bill for the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Subcommittee. This may be the area in which “infrastructure” is defined most in social terms. Out-of-pocket costs for insulin would be capped at $35 for a 30-day supply, and new mothers receiving Medicaid couldn’t be denied benefits for 12 months after they give birth. Conservatives worked assiduously during the Trump years to emasculate NASA’s crucial work in this area, arguing that the agency should concentrate solely on space exploration. This was merely part of the Trump ethos of undermining any research that might harm Republican patrons in the fossil fuel industry.

She added that people who have received automatic credits are still eligible for additional relief. The $275 million in debt relief was automatically applied to people's accounts, without them having to fill out paperwork or apply for the relief, officials said. In 2016, 70% of people here voted to leave the EU - one of the highest results in the country - and in the 2019 election, the constituency turned Tory for the first time since the Second World War. Ash Regan - the MSP who could decide the future of Humza Yousaf - has appeared to name her price for her support in next week's no-confidence vote.

Column: The infrastructure bill offers lots for California, and social spending you wouldn’t expect

The Legislature has less than two months to pass these bills and send them to the governor’s desk. Newsom introduced a series of budget bills related to infrastructure last month after lawmakers had already wrapped up committee hearings on spending proposals. Fellow Democrats have criticized the governor over the late-arriving legislation and expressed concern about not having sufficient time to consider potential impacts on communities and the environment. It grants $500 million to the Internal Revenue Service to combat tax evasion, which is chiefly a problem among rich Americans. The bill also provides $200 million for the Appalachian Regional Commission, including $10 million for Congressman Rogers' Appalachian Broadband Initiative, as well as $16 million for infrastructure improvements in Central Appalachian and $65 million for the POWER initiative. Congresswoman DeLauro’s full remarks as prepared for delivery are here. Congress is using the money to move the bureau to more forward-looking water policy, particularly on water recycling and employing nature-based solutions, such as using tools that mimic nature to conserve water.

Such mandatory spending is estimated to total nearly $3.98 trillion in the current fiscal year, or 62.4% of all federal outlays. The legislative session had come to a close in Sacramento, and elected officials had approved a whole bunch of climate change, energy and environment bills — and rejected others. Although not a few worthwhile projects fell away before the final version was passed, the result is spectacular. Biden describes some provisions as “human infrastructure,” some of which have been held over for the Build Back Better bill still on the table in Congress. More than $3.3 billion would fund wildfire risk reduction, such as mechanical thinning and controlled burns.

There had been mounting tensions between the largest party at Holyrood and their junior partners in government. The Bute House Agreement - signed back in 2021 and named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Green Party into government for the first time anywhere in the UK. The backlash has plunged Mr Yousaf's future into doubt, although party colleagues insist he will not resign. The SNP leader triggered a crisis at Holyrood after he dramatically brought the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to an end. Humza Yousaf's future as first minister is hanging in the balance ahead of a motion of no confidence next week.

The legislation would also claw back $150 million from fiscal year 2023 appropriations meant to supplement the DOE's existing loan guarantee program. The House bill supports domestic uranium enrichment capabilities, including for high-assay low enriched uranium, and would help advance small modular reactor and advanced reactor demonstration projects. The spending package also contains more than $200 million for the production of critical minerals.

The bill report, before the adoption of amendments in full Committee, is here. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. Old dams, canals and other infrastructure will be upgraded with $3.2 billion over five years. Although that’s short of the $4.6 billion the bureau identified as needed over the next five years, it’s significantly more than its annual budget. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg declined to predict which projects might be selected for funding.

Democrats leading California’s Senate and Assembly on Monday announced a legislative state budget deal, but they remain at odds with Gov. Gavin Newsom over his sweeping plan to streamline major infrastructure projects and reduce environmental litigation delays. The first such omnibus measure was passed in 1950 as a one-off experiment, and the tactic was used a couple of times in the mid-1980s. However, omnibus bills have become much more frequent in the past two decades. In all but two fiscal years since 2007, in fact, all or nearly all of the regular appropriations bills were combined into such after-deadline package deals.
